Cannula for subcutaneous implantation of pharmaceutical depots

Implantation cannula are specialized medical devices with a wide range of applications. This example is for patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) whos’ skin experiences a phototoxic effect when exposed to sunlight. Also called, sun allergy, it can cause severe skin irritation.

The cannula provides a means to implant the rod-shaped pharmaceutical capsule under the skin. This implant slowly releases medication allowing the patient to spend longer periods of time in sunlight with less painful irritation. The procedure must be repeated at the end of each capsule’s effectiveness period.


Customer requirements:

For the market launch in the USA, the customer needed an FDA-approved, easy-to-use implantation cannula.

Based on our many years of experience in the manufacture of implantation cannulas, we developed an easy-to-use implantation cannula tailored to the needs of the application, which we registered with the authorities accordingly. Incorporated into the user-friendly design are a sharp bevel and optimized tactile feel of the cannula holder and plunger facilitating east and efficient implantation of the drug capsule under the skin.
