Chiba cannula

The Chiba cannula is a versatile medical device most commonly used for fine needle biopsies, drug and contrast dye injection, and cytological and amniotic fluid aspiration.

The Chiba needle is highly precise and thin making it ideal for minimally invasive procedures in various organs such as liver, kidney, and thyroid. Using ultrasound or, a CT/MRI, the cannula can be precisely guided to the target tissue. A small sharp blade on the tip allows the doctor to collect a sample without damaging surrounding tissue.

With its fast and precise sampling, a Chiba needle has proved to be a safe and effective instrument in diagnosing and treating illnesses while avoiding open surgery.

Customer requirement:

A very thin yet strong cannula with minimal puncture forces was required.

Our solution:

In cooperation with our customers, sfm was able to develop and manufacture a thin-walled (TW) Chiba cannula with a small diameter. The sharp faceted bevel reduces puncture force, allows for easy and non-destructive tissue navigation while increasing visibility to various imaging methods to aid in guidance.
