Pencil point cannulas for anesthesia or as components of STDs (closed system drug transfer devices)

Due to the atraumatic nature of the penicil point cannula, they are extensively used in medicine, particularly in spinal anesthesia. With a closed tip and lateral openings, the pencil point design displaces tissue side-to-side rather than being punched out. This special feature causes less damage to the tissue, especially when puncturing the dura mater resulting in reduced post-procedural pain. Pencil point cannula for this application typically have very small diameters and special attention is paid to the lateral openings to be burr free. In addition to anesthesia applications, pencil point cannulas are used as components of drug transfer devices. Preventing the coring effect when puncturing a stopper is important as to not allow particulate from this material to mix with the drug substance.

Customer requirements:

For anesthesia applications, a very fine pencil point cannula with lateral openings for effective drug delivery to the spinal canal. The lateral openings are machines to be free of sharp edges and burrs, reducing the injury risk to the dura mater.

For transfer devices, pencil point geometry and smooth lateral opening were also required. This prevents coring and fragmentation of the stopper which could lead to foreign material in the drug substance.

Our solutions:

Thanks to our many years of experience and modern manufacturing techniques, sfm is able to produce the smallest diameter pencil point cannula with perfectly closed tips and burr-free lateral openings.
